I would say that it would cost more with the current discounts on the R.
My trouble is I have thinking of the clubsport as my next car for sometime. I knew the discounts would probably not happen, but I was hoping it would be sub 30k to get the car. I have been thinking about keeping the car longer with it being limited edition as I don't daily drive my GTI anymore so was thinking it would be better than the R in 5 or 6 years as be more limited.
Just returned form holiday to discover the Clubsport order books are open. However if the on the road price is only a couple hundred less than a Golf R then surely it would make sense to just go for an R. The Bucket Seats are even extra on the clubsport and the engine is detuned R engine so my money would probably go on a Golf R with this in mind. If I were to configure the Clubsport as I would like it will probably cost more than the Golf R configuration I would spec?
You'd need certain extras to make a CS be worth much extra over an R, namely the seats and black roof as a minimum.
The exclusive alloys would also help its value but as it can be specced with Pretorias then a second owner could add those themselves so that won't affect value too much.
Also, being as it's a ClubSport then you'd think the 3 door would be more in keeping with the image and therefore worth more(?)
So we're already looking at a car £2k dearer than an R and on the assumption that you'd probably get a good part ex from a dealer for your mint late model VW you probably won't get much, if any CS discount.
An R can be picked up for around £5k discount so even allowing for maybe an extra grand or so you'd get part ex'ing your current car against a full price CS that narrows the gap to £4k (just theoretical figures).
Will a ClubSport be worth £4k more than an R in four or five years?
Collectors will mothball mint low mileage CS's but will they really be worth that much more on the open market after just a few years?
The boy racers will want R's for the traction once modified.
On another unrelated but relevant note (or should that be the other way round?), I saw my first new style Civic Type R on the road yesterday. After the slating it got on here for its looks - I'm ashamed to say I really liked it!
I'd be embarrassed to drive one at my age but it appealed to the inner child in me.
