Oil temperature on UK roads

i have water and oil temp OCD. 

Probably the worst thing I ever did was configure the display to show oil temperature... There is far greater chance of me damaging the engine by crashing into the nearest ditch (by keeping one eye on the display)  than cold oil ever could.

However it has got me thinking. In normal driving the oil temp sits at 80-90degc. Spirited driving 95degc, but prolonged motorway driving at 80ish sees the temp at 100degc. Is this similar to others? I don't really have a UK ambient reference to go on, so other users input would help (or make my OCD worse!)

I too always have mine showing the oil temp and mine is exactly like yours. After its warmed up and I'm driving normally (spiritedly) then mine is in the range of 95 - 100. I mostly do motorway driving for 1 and a half to 2 hours at a time so I'd say yours is spot on.

There is a property of oils called High Temperature High Shear (HTHS) that fully synth oils do well on. It is tested at 150°C.

I certainly wouldn't worry unless I saw over 130°.

In fact constantly running below 100° bothers me a bit because any moisture in the oil (and you will have some from condensation) takes longer to "boil off". You also have volatiles from the fuel (either petrol or diesel) that need to evaporate off and a warmer oil temp helps with that.

100° for me is simply warm. And more of a target than a worry.

Yous are obviously pussays, spirited driving easily sees 105 degrees, but never much more.

Normal driving it sits at 95, maybe going up to 100 occasionally if you drive long distance.

Slightly faster driving than the limit on motorway will see 105 in my diesel, going up fish hill near Broadway tower gets it up to 115 Same if I go to Germany and go on the A3 at night time and max it for a while.

Yeah between 80-105 sounds normal for me. I know what you mean though, my mfd almost always has the oil temperature up (or the mpg if I'm feeling lucky).

Even worse now that I have torque on my phone and dash mounted, I've become a proper stats monitoring nerd!

I started paying attention to this recently as I wasn't giving it full boot until the red needle was sitting straight up at 90c then I looked at the digital reading on the dash and there's a big difference, that was showing around 50c so it appears to me that the analogue needle reading is totally useless.

Even when the digital reading says 100c the needle is still sitting straight up at 90c.

Is this the same for everyone else ?

Yes, that is because the analogue gauge is the engine coolant temperature and the digital numbers are oil temperature.
