Forget cleaning throttle, ABD is a mono motronic the injector sprays onto throttle constantly. If petrol ain't cleaning it off nothing will.
Have you had a look at the injector? Could just be stuck open, constantly over injecting fuel.

I might be able to make it to Guildford next week...... can do a fault scan etc. and have a look for you too. Had my fair share of experience on mono motronic engines.

Interested in if you have solved it as got very similar problems with 1.4 ABD Mk3. 3 thermostats and 3 different coolant sensors and still reports as running cold on temp guage - sure that it is over fueling - no labels on VCDS to see what I am measuring but no errors.

Might be a faulty speedo. What do you mean with no labels on VCDS?
ABD should be labelled pretty comprehensively. If not engine coolant temp is going to be in some of the first few measuring blocks (usually 1-3).

On VCDS in measuring blocks it just shows numbers but not a clue what they are or correspond too. It is a 93 model - all very frustrating as car for my son and not really usable at the moment.

Forgot to mention when I bridge the plug to the CTS with a paper clip the gauge goes to the max value as expected.
