Bonnet catches troublesome?

My son has a mk5 diesel and has had problems with the catch,is this common?

The catches are generally reliable, although they can go faulty in several different ways.

Pull arm worn
connecting wire stretched and requires replacing
Connecting piece under the left side of the front light can be weak/cracked or become disconnected
latch itself can shift on the fixing bolts making it hard for the latch to release or fasten correctly
Latch mechanism parts breaking
Seat Leon Cupra Black 290 DSG

My bonnet catch has been a bit dodgy and it wouldn't open but a bit of WD40 seems to have fixed it

happened to mine had the whole unit replaced by VW £97 all in
