rust repair help

Hi All,

This is pretty scary for me, i want to have a go at repairing this myself and hire out a mig for the weekend but am i biting off more than i can chew? I would love to palm it off on some garage but fear for being taken for a ride, it has no mot or tax so cant drive it to places for quotes.



This is under the sill on the drivers side just behind the wheel

any advice?

As someone who recently undertook a lot of welding (as a complete novice) on my car after a failed MOT, I can say that I found welding overhead was very difficult. If you have access to a  lift, it might be okay. But I just had mine on 4 jack stands as high as they would go, and it was difficult!

On another point, I thought I knew where this was, but why can I see daylight through the hole?
It's a mk2. Fill it, drive it, enjoy it.  :smiley:

Yeah i only have jacks that i will be placing her on while trying to do the weld. At the moment i have no option.

This is where the welding needs doing (on the underside) the hole that is letting the sunlight through is through a screw hole on the top of the door sill

some colleges teach night school courses in welding , might be worth a go to give you some experience & advice

Ideally you're going to need new sill sections for that repair mate. My advice would be to strip that side of the car, get it up in the air and get a wire wheel on a grinder to get back to bare solid metal all around. Then get a mobile welder to come and have a look and quote on letting in the new sections :)

Easy to blow more holes than you cover if you are a noob.

I wouldn't have thought getting someone in to stick a patch on would cost much more than hiring a welder to do it yourself. I advise you to check the rest of the car for rot before you get someone in as it would be cheaper in the long run to get it all done at once.

That's an inner sill section and part of the floor pan in the picture, the top of the sill/door jam looks pretty crumbly too.
I would not be surprised if that is heading towards £150 of welding and a couple of panels to cut up.
I would have the carpet up and the seats out and start digging around before spending any money.....

thanks for your input everyone. Car is all stripped inside, the picture shown is from when we first got it intact. Its the only part that needs attention to my delight!
