DSG hint and tips

This is more of a request than anything else. This is the first DSG I have ever had and was wondering what tips you guys have for it.

I do like it, but do miss my clutch....

Not driven a mk7 DSG yet, (only mk5 and 6's) but I would say it's a learning curve and takes a few weeks to get accustomed to DSG, so give it time.  Before you know it you'll forget all about the physical clutch and learn to tuck the left foot away for good 

In Drive mode you may be surprised how quickly it changes up but you get used to it.  In sport it's the opposite and hangs onto the gears for too long!  In manual using the paddles at roundabouts and corners is amusing/perplexing at first.  As they are steering wheel mounted it's easy to 'lose' the paddles, but again you get used to it, though I wish golf paddles were column mounted.

There are a few who never really get along with DSG, but hopefully you'll enjoy it, even if it can feel a little detached, less involving compared to a manual.  Let us know how you get on, likes and dislikes

I like It more than I thought I would. I love the ease of it in traffic or when you just tried to set it to Eco and ACC on, it basically drives for you.

The speed of the changes are amazing, no wonder it's quicker than the manual, but the best bit is the noises from the exhaust on over run and gear changes in sport mode.

I dislike that it also wants to take over. I was overtaking a cyclist earlier and was in sport using manual paddle control, in fourth gear, I just pushed the accelerator to get round it a bit quicker and it dropped it to second and took off like it was greyhound chasing a rabbit.

Might just be me getting used to it though

I'm still waiting for my mk7 gti, but have had a Rocco for the sat three years. I very rarely use sport mode, If I am in race mode I kick it over to manual. But as Booth said it can be tricky on roundabouts, but you get used to it by using the paddles and the stick. I tend to us the stick from first to second and sometimes third then use the paddles from then on.

One thing you could do if you like Race Mode but not the red line gear shifts is to pull back on the gear lever and it will change the gearbox map from sport to normal (you can tell because your central display changes from S1 S2 to D1 D2 etc) Or another one is to leave the gearbox in Sport but push the lever over to the left and you control the gear changes via the steering wheel paddles or pushing or pulling the gear lever to change up and down. You will get used to it but you need to find something else for your left leg to do !!

On the subject of your left leg, it might sound trivial and obvious, but it's better to stretch it out and use the footrest, rather than tucking the foot underneath yourself which results in cramp and a cricked ankle over time.  When I first got DSG, I had a tendency to do this and my ankle was really stiff after getting out of the car, so I trained myself to use the footrest- no problems after that.
