Throttle Cable
« on: 28 April 2015, 16:07 »
Hey everyone,

been busy playing with the 89 Mk2 gti 8v the last couple weeks and everything is going great! Roof gutters replaced, Fuse box, interior stripped and deep cleaned, all electrics working (so far) and siliconed around the ECU.

I have just replaced the throttle cable and im a bit puzzled as after revving it, she dips below idle and it will either sort itself out or cut out...is their anything else to adjust as it is just 1-2mm too long, i also dont have the 1mm gap as prescribed in the haynes manual next to the stopper (to the right of the end of the throttle cable that the turny thing rests on)

The only thing i can see that i can easily adjust is the yellow/plastic that you can move backwards and forwards for tension on the cable but its already at its max. Any ideas? btw i did place old and new cables side by side and the other one was ever so slightly shorter but i put that down to it stretching over time.

The older one wouldn't have stretched shorter. Are you sure you have the correct cable?

The new one will be slightly shorter, as the old one will have stretched.

I would say this isn't the cable. It is actually a fairly common mk2 fault (I battled with it for 9 months of daily driving! Having to dip the clutch right before it stalled so that it wouldn't stall itself, bad times). The fault is usually a vacuum leak, although some people report it being a broken ISV.

I replaced a whole host of things before finding out that the screw on the TB which adjusts the idle was knackered. A new TB and she is good again.
It's a mk2. Fill it, drive it, enjoy it.
