An Open Letter To The Golf R Driver

Dear driver of blue Golf R (VO14xxx)

Re: Sunday Night.

I write in relation to our meeting which commenced at around junction 2 (sb) of the M6 and proceeded along the A14 then through Cambridge and Essex up until the Harlow exit (junction 7 of the M11 I believe.)

I had heard rumors of your abilities, and also tales of jewel like interiors, however it was not until our encounter that I got to truly appreciate you in all your glory.

During our extended session of cat and mouse, you were very much the cat constantly chasing the mouse.

You clearly had skill and ability as you were willing to match me move for move, undertake and overtake for undertake and over take.
At no point did I feel like you were a danger to me, yourself or others.

On certain bends you were able to accelerate where as I had to maintain. Your car seemed very planted.

You didn't sound like a rattling tin can like your predecessor the R32. You had a nice grumble to you and you looked nice in my rear view mirror which I viewed you in for the majority of our meeting.

I must say that on the few occasions I permitted you to take the lead it was truly a pleasant experience from my point.
It was also very refreshing for me as a driver of a 3d to have learnt that no matter how hard you tried, you were totally incapable of shaking me off.*

On the occasions we were well into triple digits, it was my surprise to learn that you were limited.
I must inform you the reason I was able to gain the distances I did on those occasions was because in 7th gear my car is not limited. You may wish to try this to see if this is the case in your Golf as it may help you to fare better the next time you have an encounter with us non jewel like interior cars.

May I take this opportunity to thank you for a few things:

Thanks for making me realise that although the Golf R might be a nice place to visit, I wouldn't want to live there.

Thanks for having the balls. Not many do these days.

Thanks for being competent and capable. Again not many are these days.

Thanks for coming up side by side to me before your departure to enthusiastically nod your head and give me a thumbs up.

Thank you most of all for scaring the living sh!te out of me and practically giving me a heart attack by turning on your blue flashing lights and sirens as you left the motorway for the slip road.
I am sure by your laughter my reaction was comical to you.*

I don't know which agency or department you work for but quite clearly you are a fellow petrol head. Thanks for not nicking me, and for giving me a drive the likes of which I have not had in some time.

Yours faithfully

The driver of the 3d.

That's a funny post!

The police in R's - wow, they've got it good these days haven't they!

Also explains why the R didn't blast past the 330d.  I've had a few 'run ins' with 330d's and they don't get anywhere close!

Excellent, really well written and a good funny story. However I can't help but think that a 330d is quicker than the R. Yes, it will be very torquey but they are 258bhp as standard (from memory), so won't have the top end of the more powerful petrol 4-pot in the R...

Good story nonetheless.

If I remember correctly there is a few members on here who have golfs that are with the fire service, could it be one of these who was having a bit of fun with the Beemer? They will no doubt deny it as it would cost them their job, but scaring the crap out of the other driver with the blue lights is hilarious!

Very interesting to read that actually. I've always loved the 6-pot diesel BM's. My Father-In-Law had a 535d and then a 635d a few years back before changing to Range Rovers, and I was genuinely shocked at how quick it was (and how surprisingly nice it sounded for a diesel). A 330d M-Sport Touring in Estoril Blue certainly takes my fancy (or a 335d if I could afford one!). Looking like I will be forced into a diesel in a couple of years when my GTI is ready for changing so I'll certainly be looking further into it!
