CD AUTOCHANGER

This is a question for the audio experts and I know it might seem a bit crazy,but I understand the MK7 has a single
disc cd player in the glovebox - if you could find a 6 disc autochanger that fitted in the space taken by the single disc player in the glovebox,does anyone know if you could control the disc selection using the head unit (plus the usual track selection) - yes,I have heard of MP3's/USB sticks etc etc !!

Is it just a single disc?! I had a 6disc in my mk6 I assumed it would have the same. I have no answers to your questions I just surprised it only holds one. Why the need for CDs?

Why? The "head unit" as in the display is only that, the brains is with the CD drive.
Even if you managed to fit external changer the actual controller would not be able to talk to it..... maybe if you have a sort of USB file system emulation (not that I know any exist) but even if so SD or USB is the way forward (and much simpler).

Genuine question, but why would you want to do this? There are so many input options on the Golf, allthough I guess a CD changer would still make sense if all of your music was on CDs.

I believe (correct me if I am wrong) you do have the option of creating a dual layer (8.4Gb disc) and burning mp3's to it as data this would give you more than 6 discs capability, if that is an option that's easier. Unfortunately it seems to be a thing of the past 6 disc changers.

I guess it would make sense if you were someone who believed file based music was of inferior quality...

Mind you, does the system support FLAC? in which case it would be no different to a CD.

But broadly, yes, I agree who the hell would want a CD changer?

Well maybe the OP is a bit 'old school'?

I was the same, having a very large CD collection and was very resistant to the idea of downloading and MP3 files. I like the tactile nature of CD's and the idea of just downloading an album did not appeal at all.

I found the solution that works for me - now I carry on purchasing albums as CD's but run them through i-tunes which will convert them to MP3 files which can then be placed on a USB stick. You still have the CD as back-up and to play on the home hi-fi but the music itself is fully portable. each one takes about six minutes to convert and you can get through a stack in an hour or two...

AAC probably would yield better audio results than MP3:

However, WMA does have a lossless capability... you could WMA the files.

Mind you, not sure I'll bother.... Napalm Death's album "Live Corruption" won't sound any better :D
