Tensioner & Chain

Decided to change the tensioner on my 59 plate GTI just in case.
My question is
Do I have to replace the chain as well?

No, but a vw dealer won't do it unless they do both.
Early chains are known to have stretched so I would go by milage on if the chain is replaced too.
Also depends on your budget.

Just done under 36000 .
From what I've read doing to chain and guides changes it from roughly £300 job to a £800 job

I had this with my 1.4 TSI Leon when it was 5-years old. Changing the tensioner is quite a big job so its considered sensible to do the chain at the same time whilst its accessible.
I found the car drove noticeably better with the new chain and seemed more responsive.

Changing the tensioner is easy. Changing the chain too is a lot more complicated due to extra strip down, top cover, guides, and alignment needed.
