BTW, the new Honda Type R is fitted with 235/35 R19 91Y ContiSportContact 6 tyres. Wonder how the Michelin PSS will compare with these?

Well, you were warned....

...and they offer very little in the way of rim protection (even the version with rim protector)...

The rim protection is terrible and that's why I have kerbed rims, not my fault at all   Let us know what you think of the performance.

The Audi Specific (AO marked) and Merc Specific (MO marked) Conti 5 tyres appear to have good Flange/Rim Protection from what I have observed on these cars. I have not seen these tyres on a Golf.

Flange/Rim protection is so important especially with Diamond Cut wheels. Bridgestones, though a crap tyre, are quite good in this respect. Anyway, there is never enough Rim/Flange Protection. But too much it seems may affect a tyre's wet performance as evidenced with Hankook Tyres.

And that is why Michelin PSS tyres are worth every extra penny.

I have the Audi specific (AO marked) rim protector version of the Conti 5ps on 3 of my wheels (one oem and the others Blackcircles supplied).  I specifically telephoned Blackcircles to ensure I got this type when I had to order 2 replacement tyres. The remaining wheel is shod with the non rim protection version due to a Kwik-fit cock-up following a puncture, but that's another story.

In all honesty IMO, the AO rim protector version still offers very little by way of protection.  In fact I'd go as far as to say the version without rim protection may actually be marginally better (certainly no worse), due to the way the tyre edge contours into the alloy rim edge (it's a little to explain).  However, aesthetically speaking, I think they look better with the protector lip and it still occasionally irritates me that I have one odd mismatched Conti 5.  But not for too much longer

The conti 2s had a good rim protector on them and I specifically asked for the ones with the rim protector. They aren't ao Audi or mo Mercedes as these have worse ratings than the standard non model specific version. On another note what's the best product to use to colour the bright silver wheel weights.

Rebecca:

Who said you were just a pretty face? Smart, pretty lady, that's what you are!

Your post jogged my memory. I was going to change the Bridgestone S001 tyres on my 6GTI to something different, but remember checking out the alternatives which had pathetic rim protection in comparison. So I suffered with the S001 tyres which tramped, spun and roared.

Damn it, where rubber is concerned, winning is so elastic!

Actually on checking, mine are specified as Audi RO2 version, which I'm pretty sure is the same as AO.  But you are right these do have lower ratings; being F and B rated.  This is what my oem ones were, so I ordered replacements to keep consistent.  Despite the lower rating, they have been great so not sure how much improvement the E and A would offer?

Surely any black or dark grey touch in paint will do for the silver magnetic wheel weights.  I make a point of requesting black ones, when I have tyres fitted.  Not fussy at all

It seems that the Bridgestone S001 and RE050 tyres have top rated Rim Protection. Tiresome tyres which provide best wheel protection but ruin the car in other ways.
