I experienced a little slide around a wet dry corner today on the Bridgestone RE050 Shod R. It wasn't a quick corner, going around a tightish bend at around 25mph on the industrial estate by my new place of work - it was like tentatively walking bare footed on a wet glass floor when it started to go, I was shocked at how little speed it took. The Haldex 4WD can take care of the traction, but can't help general grip.

For a top tier brand of tyre i've never had any other tyre come close to Bridgestone's lack of grip - Dunlop SP01, Pirelli P7, Conti 3, Michelin PS3 have all been miles ahead in comparison. You can be sure VW/Audi don't have Bridgestones on when they conduct their economy and performance tests to determine their official figures. Fair dos on a 1.2TSI or 1.6TDI Golf SE, but when you're paying upwards of £25k for a car, you expect some rubber that will not hinder the car's potential performance, even if it ended up costing an extra tenner a corner.

I agree they are pants. Really shocked me the way they lost grip on a dry roundabout (Park Royal, North Circular). Rear tyres lost grip and I was not going that fast, though faster than usual..

Will have to sort this out in a month or so when I am back in London. Am in Athens for a month+ enjoying my home, the sun and excellent food.

Are either of you planning to swap them out yet for a better tyre?

Assuming my R comes with Bridgestones, I was prepared to give them a fighting chance at least, with a view to replacing them if they weren't up to the job.  Sounds like they are NOT up to it even with the 4WD?  :undecided:

I'm not a fan of Bridgestones, having experienced poor performance on a previous car.  For the last 3 years I've had Conti 5p's which have been faultess, even on 19's in winter, so will have very little tolerance for the Bridgestones if they lose grip on when cornering at moderate speeds in the R.  I'd happily go for Conti 5's again but fancy trying something else and a few respected people on here rate the Michelin PSS highly, especially on 19's, so that would be my choice if it comes to it (which seems likely).

9th: Dunlop Sport Maxx RT
10th and last: Bridgestone Potenza S001. The 19" Bridgestone RE050 tyres are an even older design than the S001s and are considered to be slightly worse than the S001s.

(B) - 17" wheels:
June 2015 Auto Express Summer Tyre test with a Mk7 Golf. Tyre size 225/45 R17.

(C):
Unfortunately, no Michelin PSS review for the 18" size.

(D) - 19" wheels:
2015 Reviews for 19" wheels and tyres read this:

BMW M4 with mixed 19" wheels:
http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/2015-Auto-Bild-Performance-Tyre-Test.htm
1st: Hankook Ventus S1 evo 2
2nd: Michelin PSS
3rd: Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2

Mk7 R with 19" wheels:
http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/2015-Sport-Auto-235-35-R19-UHP-Tyre-Test.htm
1st: Pirelli P Zero - Best overall but with high rolling resistance
2nd: ContiSportContact 5P - High noise level
3rd: Hankook - Quietest tyre and very close to Conti 5P in wet and dry (0.1 point difference).

Test Summary
Best tyre for dry roads: Pirelli P Zero
Best tyre for wet roads: Pirelli P Zero
The lowest fuel use: Dunlop SportMaxx RT
The most comfortable: Pirelli P Zero, Dunlop SportMaxx RT
The quietest tyre: Hankook Ventus S1 evo2, Dunlop SportMaxx RT

The Hankook is the quietest tyre. It also beats the Michelin PSS when used with the M4. The Audi TT is fitted with Hankook tyres. Hankook does pretty damn well in both tests. For 19" wheels it looks like a toss-up between Michelin PSS, Hankook or Perelli tyres. The Contis will probably be too noisy.

If I were to buy a replacement set, i'd be getting Michelin PSS - You can get them from Costco £149 a corner fully fitted, if they had one of their £100 voucher deals on right now i'd almost certainly be buying a set.

It is shameful that VW fit these on anything with more than 120ps and 200Nm. Makes me wonder how poor they're going to be in the winter. As most of my miles are plodding along on my commute right now rather than fun miles while the car is running in (still keeping an eye out for something else on the job-front) and the weather is warm, i'm not in a huge rush to change them.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Agree wholeheartedly.  The Bridgstones really have no place on this type of car.

If I do have the misfortune to get them on my R and decide they have to go, likewise I will be going for Michelin PSS.   That's a good price.  I'm not a member of Costco so would probably source them elsewhere online.

I've just ordered 4 Dunlop sport maxx rt to be fitted next week. Got them for 90 quid each fitted from VW of all places. What I've found with the conti 2's is they have rapidly gone to 2mm from just above 3 about a month ago granted I've been to Skye and back but I don't drive like an idiot. Going to give the Dunlop's a go and at 90 quid each why not.

Hello from sunny Athens.
I posted this today on the R Forum which you might find useful:
Thank you.

My pleasure.

In summary:

For Golf 7GTI with 18" wheels it is Conti 5P (came first), Pirelli (came second), Michelin PSS ?? (not reviewed in 18").

For Golf 7R with 19" wheels it is Pirelli (first), Conti 5P (second but noisy), Hankook (very close third with 0.1 point difference for wet and dry grip, very quiet), Michelin PSS ?? (reviewed on M4 with mixed 19" tyres, came second after the Hankook).

Hankook are the quietist tyres from the above list. Conti tyres are the nosiest.

Now all we need is a few buying Conti 5Ps, Pirellis, Michelins and Hankooks and reporting back.

Anything is better than the Bridgestones.

And how is life in sunny Athens Asker?

No, in fact don't tell me as you'll only depress me as sit here at my desk drowning in the ever increasing work mountain    At least the sun is out-ish here today and I have managed to spend the entire morning down by the river on work business, so not all doom and gloom.

Tyres - I agree, ANYTHING is better than Bridgstones on performance cars such as these.  We get fobbed off here with the Bridgstones, not so our European cousins

I read tyre tests every year and they are of interest but I have to say I take more notice of the reviews of real world users on forums etc.  In terms of tyre noise, that isn't the primary concern for me, I'm much more interested in grip capabilities.  My current Conti 5p's tyres are quite noisy (but otherwise brilliant), however some of that is down to the fact they are on 19's.  I'm accustomed to the noise and it varies greatly depending on the road surface, of which there are myriad variations on our UK roads.  I tend to listen to my music in my car at a reasonably loud volume so that wins the battle over tyre noise

Interesting figures regarding Rim Protection. Pirelli and Hankook are not very good: with 2.5mm and 3mm Rim Protection. Unless they have improved on this since 2011, it could rule them out. Best Rim Protection is Bridgestone: 5.5mm, followed by Conti: 5mm, Michelin/Goodyear 4.5mm.

Lightest Tyre Conti 5P.

Michelin PSS is optimised for dry handling and road holding and is not very good in the wet.

NEWSFLASH: I have also read that there is a ContiSportContact 6 in the pipeline and soon to be released!
