It wouldn't take much for VW to up economy by 10-15% - all they have to do is add active cylinder technology to the GTI and R engines (would it really be that hard to do?), but that would probably take the GTI too close to the GTD for comfort - a bit of market protection going on there? With as many gears as a mountain bike

the DSG might be pretty indecisive between all or nothing throttle responses as to which gear it wants to be in.
