Biturbo
« on: 19 October 2014, 20:09 »
Iv ordered R the other week to replace my GTI..threads been done I know but also ordered a new Passat estate Biturbo tdi last Friday to replace my wifes Alltrack.  Cant wait to drive this 4 pot twin turbo Tdi with 240bhp and 500 nm. There was alot of chatter at the dealers that they are hoping VW would drop the engine in to a GTD at some point..what a Golf that would make..im not sure my self that vw would do this however...big leap..

They couldn't feasably drop this engine into a Golf and still call it a GTD. With the wrong tyres (Bridgestones), traction is already piss-poor from a standstill in a GTD, adding more power and torque without giving 4WD isn't going to change the 0-62 time (that is always quoted) significantly for the better.

It would also be significantly more expensive than the GTI and be a bit more powerful - have you seen the price difference between 2WD Passat 190TDI ultra and the 4WD Bi-turbo variant? Its about £5100.

It needs to be 4WD to put that power and torque down in anything less than 4th gear, and at the price it'll cost it will end up being a diesel companion to the R and not the GTI (which is exactly what is rumoured to be happening in the not too distant future). It'll be an R-D, a GTD-R or something similar.

Yes spot on im in total agreement with that torque it would not get the power down.
There is a large jump in price as you said but some of that is the equipment level is higher in the 240 such as full LED head lights etc..almost went for the 190R line but just knew I would be driving it thinking...I wonder what the 240 is like.
Its a heck of a engine though. ? Its in line with the 330d and c350cdi but only a 4 pot so lighter. I dont think theres another one like it as far as im aware. I guess with the constant chase for emissions its the way to go.?

Yes, it may be about the emissions. My DTUK boxed GTD is supposedly 240PS (will be thereabouts), and it is a sod to get the power down in anything below 4th in the wet or 3rd in the dry. My mpg hasn't appreciably dipped since adding it, so CO2 should be about the same, but who knows what the NOx or SOx are doing when you push on and see the oil temp climb.

Perhaps if it's not the emissions, but more to do with VW being supremely confident that even an abused GTD with 240ps will still have a clutch, injectors and turbo that last the distance in the Biturbo variant.

I do think a 4WD GTD would be a winner. Faster than a GTI and 40mpg if driven hard, 52mpg doing 80mph on the motorway. It would make far more sense to company drivers as I can't see the residuals on it beating the 60% GFV after 3 years of the current R - purely because nothing gets above 60% unless it's severely limited in it's manufacture, it's unsustainable.

At that point you'd have 3 year old models selling for 80-85% of RRP by the time the dealership gets their cut, and who wants to buy a 3 year old car for 2 grand less than a new one can cost with discount?

I think once we are at that level of retained value at 3 years you'd kiss goodbye to any discount on a new one as demand would just be huge.

I think if it doesn't happen, that will be the reason...
