Go for it Jim, as said, check out the R forum for the deals going as last time I was over there (admittedly a while ago) there were threads and threads on the subject.
Why buy when you can lease for peanuts? Judging by the amount of press these deals have received and wider public awareness thanks to hotukdeals etc it's possible history is in the making here in the way this type of car has become as affordable as something quite mundane to the masses. Maybe leasing will become the norm in coming years or maybe VW will get a nasty shock in a couple of years?!!! The latter unlikely!
With these deals the R is now in the public eye just like the M135i bargains of last year. These hyper hatches have become the new GTIs and alas I think it is that car which will currently fall off the radar in the uk at least for most buyers. The R sold very few in mk6 guise and now commands a big premium hence VW's high GMFV in the 7R. The 7R has now got a status a bit like the ED30 did and the GTI (which over performed in all the road tests before the R was launched) has now slipped almost as quietly into the background as the mk6 GTI did in sales which were never anywhere near as strong as mk5 GTI sales.
As monkeyhanger says, VW know they can sell as many as they make but they won't make as many as they can sell thus keeping values up secondhand.
I think it's more us GTI owners that will have resale concerns more than anything if the R becomes too popular. The R is bringing in people that are new to the brand so VW will need to make sure the quality on them is good as many will be downsizers from more premium brands and many will be people that would never have been able to afford a £30k car if it wasn't for these leases.
As for the GTI? Well, it's a Golf so *should* do ok with resale values, but not as well as a mk5 or mk6 in their day.
The long and short of it is everyone should lease an R while the going is good - fill yer boots!
