My exhaust back box has two pipes at the very rear.  Is this OE on a 1988 GTi?

the box over the rear beam is very restrictive though u should loose that one..

there is no box over the rear beam? There's a box either side. It's all resrictive unless u have a custom free flow system made up.

and its not restrictive either if its a OE VAG item. the OE VAG items are just as well flowed as any stainless steel system from down pipe back. post on ClubGTI ages ago with dyno's to prove it
