Help! engine oil leak
« on: 13 September 2014, 13:38 »
leak only happens when engine turned over.

Thought it was crank seal but no sign of it from there!

Oil pisses out from somewhere above the diff and comes down the engine side of the diff!
So have I missed a seal or a bolt on that end of the engine????

Len you sure its not gearbox oil? Have a sniff of it. When i had a leak it lead me to believe it was the sump after faffing about for days we took the gearbox off and what not and you could blatently see where it was comming from. The crank seal bent on itself.

There is a core plug at on the side of the block at the end of the intermediate shaft its a oil core plug not a coolant plug.
Its covered by the metal plate between bell housing and block anything bellow this can only be sump gasket or crank seal or crank seal flange gasket or it has a m6 bolt missing.

Is yours an ABF?

I've got an oil leak too, seems fairly major as when I look down the back, the subframe had it pooling and it's wet under the dizzy and over the top of the gearbox..

Not sure what it is, I'm too new to the mk3 golf to know the usual places to check!!

Can you post photos of what you're seeing? I'll post some tomorrow and maybe we have the same issue lol.

Was gonna have a look under mine when I do the oil change next weekend..

But my leak is coming from under the dizzy near the 2 or 3 sensors plugged into the side of the engine and whatever it is is pissing oil out everywhere!

Well I have started stripping down the engine to take it out and have a good look!

Like Chris has said above it might be a missing bolt on the plate housing the end crank seal or a missing stud maybe!
But cant see that until I get the engine out and split away the gearbox.

have heard I could take the gearbox off only but now I know I have been turning it over with reduced oil in there I want to check the bores and all bearings for any damage.
Plus that allows me to swap to the correct crank sensor trigger wheel.

Will let ya know how I get on

Awesome man. I wish i was better/more confident/more knowledgeable about stripping engines down.. would love to be able to just remove and reinsert engines as needed. I should've gone to mechanics college instead of uni :P

do let us know how you get on, and post as many photos as you can be arsed to take whilst you're elbow deep in engine bits! would be good to see what you see when you find the leak, might help me find mine.

I've just rebuilt my valver. Pretty simple & straight forward to do..

These middle of job pics might help you to pin point your oil leak?
