I've done 17k miles and my bonnet is peppered with white flecks (TR).  My money is on the soft, cheap paint that VW started using from the Mk 6 onwards

Yes they do that now - no glossy clear coat for the areas the wont be seen.

White doesn't hide the chips any better as the undercoat is grey on the bodywork and black on plastic parts. Nothing will stop stone chips unfortunately and no car is better or worse.

Not sure about that. Mine is white and with almost 10k miles there isn't a single stone chip on the bonnet or the bumper. I've picked up a couple of pin-prick sized ones on the front wings but they're barely visible against the surrounding white. My MK6 was also white and I also found it very resilient. Previous cars I owned were all dark metallics and were a nightmare.
I've got 8500 miles on mine and have had to touch in one under the lip of the bonnet and I've got another one to do on the bonnet. I wasn't saying about the amount of chips but when you do get them they are easily visible due to the grey undercoat.

1500 miles and the biggest stone chip ever.

It's about the same size as a small semi detached house...... FML.
