Very very mild cam. Around the 268-272 is where they start to get more noticeable without ruining the drive ability.

272 or 285 would be a better choice.

ok thanks guys. I guess its not worth throwing 200 quid at a cam that will be barely noticeable. it does say 10bhp gain but going by the specs that does seem optimistic.

Have you had the head ported and polished?  If you have you will get bigger gains from the cam.

no the head is bog standard. im thinking if I fit a kent gs2h cam to it then that might make up for the lack of headwork. any thoughts on this??? what cam/head are you running matty?

I've had my 8v gti cylinder head ported and polished and it has taken the power up to 123bhp on the rolling road.  The additional power comes in at 4200 revs all the way up to the red line (change gear at 6200 revs to stay in power band).  Still manage to easily get 35-40mpg as well with mixed driving!

I haven't decided whether or not to upgrade the cams on mine yet as it drives so well as it is but have learned a lot from the guy who did the work on my cylinder head (he is well into his 70s and knows his stuff, been doing up engines his whole life).  Turns out the first stage to doing up an engine like ours is to P&P it.  If you go ahead and just stick upgraded cams on you will get gains but you are maximising the potential of it if you have P&P the head first as you will have the increased air flow.

I run a TSR pack D head which is ported and polished and has larger valves (40.5mm inlet with 7mm stems and large cutback, 35mm exhaust with heavy cut back). This is run with a TSR 202 cam, three angle valve seats also. Sit that on a 2l bottom end and it goes alright. Got 35mpg out of a tank yesterday also. I have mine set up for point to point rather than top end so my cam comes in around 3500rpm but I could really do with a wilder cam considering the head work. A vernier pulley will allow the power band to be moved around and honed in if you do get a cam.

do you notice any loss of torque lower in the revs since you had head done? and what was actually done to it? and how much it cost you?

:shocked:crikey that sounds like a pretty trick head you have there. is pack d not a bit extreme for a road car?
