Dipped headlights not working
« on: 06 June 2014, 10:53 »
Hi All,

Prepping the VR6 for its MOT and I've come across a strange problem. The dipped headlights don't come on when the switch is in the headlights position. They do, however, come on, full brightness, in the sidelight position! Main beam operates fine but obviously without the dipped headlights.

Any ideas?

TIA

Either light switch or stalk faulty...

Do you have fogs? If not I got a no fogs light switch here that you can have if you cover postage.

Going to have a look at the switch first seeing as the main beam seems to be switching on/off OK.
Mine has front fogs but thanks for the offer anyway.

Anyone got access or a link to a wiring diagram for the headlight circuit?

Well the plot thickens. I've removed both the light switch and the stalk and tested both as far as I can work out from the wiring diagrams. Both seem to be working OK. What I have found is a yellow wire that looks like it was connected to the stalk at one time but at some point has been cut and black taped. :-

The spade connector is completely missing from the plug:-

But the spades on the stalk show witness signs of having had a connector fitted at some point:-

That doesn't really explain why they would suddenly stop working but having now removed more components, the cluster etc., I can see black tape and interesting connections all over the place. I'm wondering if one of them has gone bad.

Thanks for this.......wasn't aware of a connector under the airbox...........back to the wiring diagrams to see what this one is.

Fixed!

Started ripping into the fusebox this afternoon to try some continuity checks. Bloody fiddly and awkward but when I got to unplugging the 'R' connector (light switch wiring harness) I found that it wasn't fully seated/connected:-

All back together now and working as advertised..........now to book the MOT
