Electric golf...
« on: 14 May 2014, 09:58 »
I'm quite interested in the GTE as think it could be a very viable next car for me.

Just been perusing the Internet and found that the normal E-golf is available for order and has been priced at under £26,000.  It comes in SE trim only, but with the additions of 2zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors and discover Pro as standard.  It states that the batteries are integrated into the chassis though, so that may affect costs of financing as I can see it being an even bigger job to replace at the end of their natural life.

I'm actually really interested to see where this technology leads over the next few years!

You can see where the technology leads to just now in the form of the P1, Laferrari and Porsche 918, only hybrid cars im interested in although just slightly out of my budget

In all seriousness though they would need to improve both the performance and the length of battery time (30 miles only)to get my attention. Now if the car churned out 200 -300bhp with the potential to supplement it by a futher 100bhp from the electric motor a la P1 style then i would most definitely be interested

The GTE is a good prospect though as it is hybrid, rather than full electric like the e-Golf.

GTE claims 600 miles on a tank full of fuel, which is good considering the tank is something like 3 gallons.  It's also faster than a GTD and about GTI money.  Considering the financial benefits of running it, I can see it being a big seller.

There is a previous GTE thread on here and I believe the audi e-tron actually managed to acheive the claimed figures.

But yeah, I would like an R with a 110PS electric engine added to it please :)

Modding would involve buying suped up batteries from Japan and there would be threads about what synthetic engine noise do you have on when you drive on electric only, deep German v8 or howling Italian v10 lol

A full electric would be strange.  You get full power from the word go, but no engine noise at all! Haha.

I wonder if that is due to a decision made due to projected buyers or a necessity because of the layout of the gubbins that make it go.

5 door because it looks nicer obviously  the projected audience for the car will probably be families so 5door makes more sense from VW. The GTE isn't faster than a gtd/gti/r so not sure where your info is from.

The reviews I read before said it had a 0-62 of 7.4 seconds, which puts it just ahead of the GTD.  I didn't say it was faster than a GTI, I said it was in the same price range as a GTI (considering it has discover Pro as standard).  That was a few months ago, to be fair.  Plus it has the cheapest running costs of the performance golf's, with 201bhp too.

Surprisingly the reviews said it handled particularly well as the weight is evenly distributed and very low down.

I shall have to read if any more reviews have come out since.
