Smoke/boost leak test.
« on: 29 April 2014, 23:18 »
How much should this cost me? I think (pretty sure) I have a boost leak or a leak in the PCV system.
I thought Volkswagens were supposed to be reliable?

Rather than paying for the test which can range from £30-£50 just get a catch can and do the ultimate delete whilst your there http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4893472-DIY-Ultimate-SAI-N249-PCV-EVAP-Delete
ARZ K03s, Oettinger Side Skirts, R32 front, Carbon stage 2, Forge 007p (yellow spring), Forge Actuator (yellow spring), Pipercross panel filter with DSG parts, N249 and N112 deleted, SAI deleted, Carbon canister deleted, Rear wiper deleted, Long Life turbo back custom exhaust with 200 cell sports cat, VR6/G60 clutch kit, Creation Motorsport TIP, Catch can, 'Wellycooler', K04 charge pipe, S3 ported inlet manifold - looks pretty standard on the outside though :)

Haven't got any money to spend on the car, I need it to run and that's literally it at the moment. Until my pay rise in a year and a bit, I'm broke!

So obviously the car threw up a load of faults this morning, 17705 and 17545 (boost leak related I assume).

As well as 17522 for a lambda sensor. And 16825 for my evap system being dodgy.

Advice on where to start? Bearing in mind I have no money.

what I was getting at was you would pay around the same amount for the smoke test as you would for ripping it all out and fitting a catch can give or take a tenner

Soapy water and spray bottle with the engine running found a few leaks for me.

Cheaper than a smoke test :)

Sadly not. I could use more information really. Cars not pulling smoothly, 3rd is pretty lumpy on boost and it bloody stinks of rich petrol when i sit stationary. The CEL only ever comes on when it idles for a while after a drive.

Also that cam tensioner problem is back.

UGH. WHY.

(inb4 because you bought a mk4)

Sadly I have a full time job, I used to be a manager of a Restaurant, got fed up and wanted to do something that I was passionate about. So started an engineering apprenticeship in the Ministry of Defence. Pays a lot less but give me a few years and I'll be sitting pretty. Hopefully in my Nissan 350z

If you are local to Milton Keynes mate I will do a boost leak test for free for you
