Problem with 2000 1.8t AGU
« on: 28 March 2014, 22:21 »
Hi, i've seen this posted on here a few times now, but i have followed the guides and it has had no success.

The problem I am Facing is that the car is idling very erratically - ranges between 500rpm and 1800 rpm, It also seems to sometimes stall when i dip the clutch (or mid way between gears (it bump starts itself)) or on the other hand it keeps the revs up at around 1550rpm, until i engage the clutch again. This problem is very annoying and also quite dangerous; when it stalls you barely notice the sound change so when you go to pull away there is nothing there, or on the other hand it stalls whilst your moving, then when you let the clutch back in it will either bump start or stop all together.

What is almost always suggested is that it is a dirty throttle body, though, i have cleaned it thoroughly and it still hasn't made any difference.

Are there any other things i should check? - and i am going to use a vag-com to assess it this monday.

Thanks in advance, Mo

Hi,

Go for the vagcom, that will tell you a lot of areas to look at but being an AGU I dont know how much they give away. I'd also consider the MAF sensor. Try unplugging it for a drive an d see if the problem persists? If not these, then you could be looking at a boost leak somewhere - get it smoke tested.

No misfires?
I thought Volkswagens were supposed to be reliable?

After cleaning it did you "turn your ignition on and leave it on for 30 odd seconds without starting it, then turn the ignition offf, then back on and start the car"?

There are no misfires, and no I didn't leave the ignition on for 30 seconds, I'm going to take the battery off for 30 mins a bit later to reset the ecu, until I can get it checked by vag com.
Thanks, Mo

Probs throttle body needs reset. As you most likely have lost the basic settings for it. Its happened to mine mk3 gti and people said no you cant reset it. But after calling someone out they managed to reset it. Mechanics said to be your throttle is fooked and another one. But the guy knew what he was doing.

Okay thanks, Would i be able to just disconnect the battery for 20 mins to reset the ecu / throttlebody? or does it have to be done by vag com?

Thanks, Mo
