That wire should go from one of the bolts on the coil bracket to that bolt on the rocker cover, you can see on your pic that it has snapped and is now hanging loose!  You'll need to replace it, get down your local scrappy pretty much all VWs should have an earth lead similar to that :)

Edit: Those other 2 wires you show are actually in the correct place on your engine, the 2 blue connectors bolted to the rocker cover shown in the other picture are in the wrong place

Not that it matters as long as they get a decent contact to the block or the chassis it doesn't matter where they go :)

Eh? Another one!  :lipsrsealed:

I thought these two are earth straps - you'll notice in the pics they are in the wrong spot though!

So, now im more confused, unless the wire (from my first pic) that came off is incorrectly placed too  :undecided:

ive helped wire a few of my mates mk2's and them two wires should be fine. just clean them up. Normaly if one of those are disconnected. the engine wont start or the wipers wont work. in my experience

That'll be the fuel pump priming, it means your ECU is working :)

Check the buzz actually comes from the pump though and not from an electrical fire somewhere!

The pump is mounted under the car just in front of the driver side rear wheel, and should always prime for a second or so when u turn the key.

buzzing comes from the isv not the fuel pump that only primes and stops the continous buzz is the metal thing on the manifold with rubber tubes coming from each side is the isv. that strap in the picture jim is a black thin strip and its the strap from the coil to the block goes in the same place as the earths. and problems give me a bell and ill pop over the weekend and sort it out for ya
