A lot of smoke but no problems what was the cause
« on: 25 February 2014, 10:20 »
I was overtaking a car at around 60 - 70mph at 6000 odd RPM and a massive cloud of smoke came out the back i could see a thing behind me. My instant thought was piston rings as car was still driving ok then after letting off back to normal revs car was fine have done over 200 miles since then and not one problem what could have caused this not low on any fluids either.

I was worried my 180k engine was about to finally let me down .
But thank god drives like new

So flat out in 2nd  valves going like the clappers and smoke. Your valve guide seals are worn and letting oil pass into the cylinder. Also your rings will be worn and letting bit more oil into the cylinders too and on ignition the oil is burnt off.

It should be using oil!

It could also be head gasket.  As the revs are up and pressure a the coolant could be passing the gasket into the cylinder.

Was it white smoke or blue?

If you leave the car off for a few hours and start it does it kick a bit of smoke out? Try standing at the door and start it with foot on the throttle and see if theres smoke.

Nope  no smoke at all and using no oil this incident happened in Norfolk over 100 miles away has been stop started and revved like it should be since then
Not one bit of blue smoke funny idle loss of water or any running problems smoke was a darkish colour was only like 3 seconds worth but a lot of smoke to cover two lanes of road.

I have stop started and revved the car cold since this happened with no smoke at all.

if you dont drive it like that very often you can get build up of stuff that when you floor it it clears it out a bit.
when i first got my abf my mate was driving it in front of me and and floored it when we got on the motorway and bit of darkish smoke came out for like a second or two and since then i have never seen it smoke at all.
previous owner was a woman who only used it to take kids to school 5 mins down the road so dont think it had been floored in a long time.

Did you by any chance overfill the oil?

nope about 2mm above maximum as always as i say it was dark brown smoke didn't look blue and was definitely not white.
I have put my foot down previous to this event with no smoke or any problems and oil change was done over a month ago now and not been topped up since.
So to much oil is not the issue but it is very puzzling.
