Another factor is weight. I bet the batteries and motor add some mass to it over a GTI. It's one thing going fast in a straight line but it's something else altogether stopping it and turning it. In my opinion these are the GTI's key attributes, not so much power in a straight line.

Bob on that.

I used to have one of the Astra GTE's (referred to earlier in thread), infact I owned 2, both 8V and 16V versions (not at the same time). In its day it was a tremendous performer, particularly the 16V version, really used to fly. The chassis could not really cope with the power though.

Anyway - off topic somewhat, yes - until the costs come down you wont find me buying into hybrid/electric.

KO4 that bad boy! Lol beast in the making.

But isn't strange to think that in like 10 years we'll probably be tuning electric cars, APR will have to sell souped up batteries or something lol

I had a in 88 a 87 E reg white GTE, after superchips and big bore it went v well indeedy 0-90 15s but what a tinny hunk if junk! Build quality and materials were shocking and the lift off oversteer was dramatic! Good car though for a 19 year old. Happy times

DLR's in the bumper look nice but I think I prefer the U xenons.   I think the GTI/GTD's look much nicer.  What's with the blue stripe through the lights?  Wouldn't that have been better on the R?

I think I read the e-tron will be around the £30,000 mark.

I think the big thing will be business leases.  Imagine the tax benefits from getting that!

Is that £30k after the £5k government contribution towards hybrid cars?

Looking at the e-tron it states that it will cost £32,700, but doesn't 't specify.  It also says it is one of the better handling A3's. I suppose although heavier the weight distribution is good.

They also state that although the brochure says 188mpg it actually did 235mpg on the test drive. It's only slightly slower than the GTi and will do 31 miles on electric alone, taking 2 hrs and 15 minutes to charge.

All seems impressive actually. I work 17 miles from home so could do the commute almost entirely on electricity, plus tax free. I could potentially save £7000 over a three year term. That could actually be a viable daily drive for a private owner.

Of course, they're just initially figures.  The GFV could be massively affected by the life of the batteries.

Just found an article that claims the GTE will actually do 37 miles on electric and is expected to Coast £28,000 when the £5000 from the government is used.

Very interesting indeed - I wonder what a charge costs plugged in to a home wall socket?
