Buckled Alloys .... How tough are the Monza's

Just though I'd put this out there to see what peoples thoughts are with regards to pot holes etc.

Now I drive my car carefully and I pretty much have a mental map of every pot hole in my head on my day to day journeys, some people follwoing must think I'm a bit weird veering over to the left then back over to the right but it keeps my wheels safe and ultimatrely I couldn't give a sh!t what the key in the punto thinks! 

All this carefulness however there is always times when a small lack of concentration and bang you hit a pot hole!

So my query is how tough are the monzas, when you accidentally hit one the bang in the car is quite daunting however I always shrug it off as the tyre would of absorbed the majority etc and they are built to take a bit of pounding.

What's everyones general feeling on this one?

Anyone had an unfortunate issue of having the alloys written off?

They are generally quite tough I think, I had 2 refurbed and one was buckled and it was only an extra £10 to straighten out. I think they will be a lot stronger than the replicas that are out there!

Not Monza's, but had to replace one of my Glendales last year due to pothole damage.  The damage was discovered when the car went in for wheel alignment.  The inside of wheel was badly buckled and the tyre shredded, but amazingly had not blown.  I'd noticed that the car felt like it was slightly pulling to the left and so booked it in for alignment check and hey presto.  In retrospect I have a pretty good idea of which pothole inflicted the damage but apart from the slight pull, the car drove fine.

I'm very much like you, have a mental note of all local potholes and go to great pains to avoid them.  However it's getting harder to do so at the moment as new holes seem to appear every day and are often filled with water.   Also everyone is now driving so far over to the middle of the road for fear of hitting a pothole or to avoid the massive puddles, that every drive has become like a Dodgems ride.

OEM wheels seem to be reasonably strong but a low profile tyre exposes the wheel to more force when you hit a pot hole.

I recently found out I have a slight buckle in one of my Glendale wheels so will be replacing it. I might see if the wheel can be straightened...the condition the roads are in having a spare wheel isn't a bad idea.

Good idea about a spare, if it can be fixed.  Unfortunately mine was too damaged for a repair

Kind of in topic but not vw just for info and a bit of a laugh my mate has a 325 with run flats he had three cracks in his wheels

Yep stiffer sidewalls on run flat tyres will make it worse.

The GTI rides likes a dream over potholes compared to an M-sport BMW E9x 3 series. I had one before the Golf which had 3 cracked 19" wheels within a year, and that was with non runflats fitted.

The Monza's look very sturdy in comparison, helped by much more forgiving suspention .

Cracked BMW wheels are well known issue, the wheels on my F30 though seem tough as old boots with some of the potholes I've crashed through.

Good to know people's thoughts. I'm planning on getting mine refurbed at some point so will know then if I have slightly damaged any. Hopefully not though!
