Problem with new MDI iPhone 5 Lightning Cable
« on: 06 February 2014, 11:42 »
Hi All!

Long time lurker and fan of the forum, but just registered in the hope someone can help with a problem I have with my car!

This week I bought a new MDI (Media connection) cable for my MK6 GTI which has the lightning connector to support iPhone 5 / 5S, in the hope I can start playing music from my iPhone 5 to the audio system in the car.

I plugged in the cable today and although the phone starts to charge (suggesting there is a live connection between phone and car), the RNS 510 head unit does not recognise my iPhone 5 and does not allow me to play music. It just greys out the Aux bit on the Media screen as if nothing is plugged in!

Just wondering if anyone has had this issue? Or does anyone have some tips or suggestions on what I could do to potentially resolve the problem? Not sure if its an issue with the cable, or the head unit, or if a software update is needed for car maybe?

Any help or guidance would be much appreciated!

Many Thanks,

Amo

Is it a genuine VW cable?  Think most of us in this section with iphone 5 are still using the old mdi cable in conjunction with an apple adaptor.  I refuse to pay the extortionate price VW charge for the new cable when an adaptor works fine.

Some in the mark 7 section using new mdi lightning cable but obviously different head unit.

Thanks for the quick reply booth11

I 'think' its a genuine cable! Bought it off eBay for 30 GBP (which at the time seemed like a bargain..). Although I would be surprised if a fake/replica cable could have already come onto the market so quickly, and they seem very rare on ebay.

I was put off the extortionate price VW are charging as well, which is why I snapped up the cable. I am wondering if I should buy/borrow the adaptor to see if that works?

Interested in this also.

I purchased the spendy dealer option cable (£60 and white collar,mk7 section seem to have Green )
Similar problem to you,but not everytime I plug the phone in.Sometimes it defaults to bluetooth audio, even though I have de-selected bt audio in settings, then wont give me MDI playback,by this time I have lost interest and pressed the CD button
Other faults are that the phone keeps making the charged Chime as tho its loosing connection, and sometimes it displays the wrong song title also.

One day I will get around to taking it back to the dealer, thank gawd for the good ol' fashioned CD coz this modern stuff is junk...and don't get me started on about the icantmakeaphukinphonecall5

Hi GS Wax,

Just checked my cable and it has a green moulding / band on there. Does that mean its a MK7 only cable and not compatible for a MK6? Might be a case of mystery solved for me if that is the case!

Have a read through this thread, it may help.  Someone says the green collar lead may be specific to the mark 7.
