With an engine light coming on it might be worth booking it in for VW to have a look at. Light might of disappeared but could still be a fault code logged.

Ive had this. was driving on the motorway and all of a sudden the car felt like it lost a bit of power and the yellow EPC light came up in the rev counter. Finished my journey and when I went to restart the car it was gone, not had it back since (been about 2 weeks and 400 odd miles).

I spoke to my sales dealer guy who said I could book it in if I wanted, but I haven't yet as not had the time, and the fact that it hasn't happened again makes me think it was just a random one off ? Do you guys think I should have them take a look ? could it be a potential damage problem ?

So, if it hasn't come back it could well just have been a transient bad signal from one of the sensors... these can be caused by all sorts of things.

The other statement is correct - ajmoir36 - that the fault will be logged in the ECU until cleared (either using software or disconnecting the battery for a few minutes)... if it were me, and the light has reset, I would leave it and keep an eye for its return. If you have another EPC light in the next week or two then I would be seeking an investigation.

Mine did the same thing the other night while I was sitting in it with vag com. It was idleing for over an hour. When ever the cooling fan kicked in, it would drop a cylinder. It would just stop firing all together. It was way more severe than just a mis fire.

Once the fan turned off, the cylinder would run again. It wouldnt through an epc light unless I revved it. There are 2 faults logged in the ecu, one for cylinder 4 miss-fire and another to do with cylinder activation.

I havnt booked it in to be checked yet. The fans wouldnt be used much this time of year anyway. I couldnt find a way to turn on the fans with vcds (output tests) so the only way to replicate it is to let her get hot enough to turn on the fan.

Cheers for the advice, haven't had the warning light back yet and its been quite a long time, car seems fine with no issues so im happy to treat it as a one off sensor error.
