IIRC the metal pipe that joins to the matrix -leave that pipe on and remove other.

Go find a Golf3 1.8 or 2.0 in the scrapyard and rob the pipes that run to the heater matrix in the bulkhead.  Replace your pipes with these and avoid 22mm copper inserts in your system.

No heat is usually the bloody valves seizing up.  I drove from Brighton to Bristol one January in a Syncro with this issue.  A car with NO heat is a hateful thing!
