stripped mk4`s
« on: 02 November 2013, 20:01 »
ok, im sure Ive asked something along these lines before, but can remember.
has anyone here removed their front door cards?. do you have pics?.
I`m thinking of doing a diy lexan window installation so the window reg won`t be needed. just need to come up with a mechanism to open the door. I`m thinking of making aluminium (would love to use carbon fibre) door cards and have an empty door shell. I can then do away with most the wiring etc.

Apart from making your car pretty horrid inside, what are the reasons for doing this mate?

the door cards weigh quite a bit, so does the window reg. I don't mind it being horrid inside, this car isn't for full time road use, it is "slowly" being built for track!

Mk4s weigh a ton to start with.

It's like putting Susan Boyle on a diet. She's never gonna be a karsashian.

If your wanting to go full track prep. Drill a hole at the top of the door. Big enough to fit the wire through but not the sleeve and put a tie wrap on it. No weight of regulator panel etc and door can be opened.

would like a lever rather than a zip tie to pull lol.
oh and the reason the mk4 Is so heavy, is not because of the shell, but because of all the sh!t that's bolted to it.
not to say that the shell isn't heavy, but I have weighed a lot of the sh!t that I took out and binned, and so far I have taken out well over 100kg. try bench pressing that!
with all the crap taken out, the car feels so much more alive. just for reference the front seats weigh aprox 40kg for the pair!

I left it as it was after removing it, didn't bother putting anything in its place
