Which tyres
« on: 18 September 2013, 10:11 »
Just had the car serviced and been told that I will be needing new front tyres in circa 3000 miles.   Current tyres are the Dunlop Supermaxx and I am very pleased with them.  I am also only looking to change the front two and don't know if it's a wise idea to mix makes from front to back (rear tyres have 6mm so these will be staying on the car).

Any good reviews or ideas on the best tyres for the Golf?

In short the 3 best tyres that are commonly agreed on as being the best for the MK5 are:

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 (Ive got the Assy 1 on my car and love them) - Review

Michelin Pilot Sport 3 PS3 - Review

Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta - Review

You cant go wrong with any of these tyres. Its worth spending money on a good set, waste of a car otherwise.

I ran PS2's on the Mk5, went to PS3's and was disappointed. Then went to Conti's and faith was restored. Can be noisy though.

Very personal and subjective mind, one person's meat, etc .....

I have used the best tyres from a few top manufacturers over the years on BMW's, VW's and Subaru's, including;

Michelin Pilot Sport 1,2 and 3
Bridgestone Potenza RE050A
Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3
Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2

By far the best overall tyres have been the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2.  I have never come across a better tyre in 15 years of driving.
Turbocharged and liking it...

You like them?
I thought they were tragic...little dry grip, even less wet grip and they wore out double quick.
I have Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics on my Mk6 GTI and Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2s on my Mk5 GT...and they are vastly better. Better grip wet and dry, better wear and less noise.

If I were you, I'd swap them over, wear out the ones with 6mm of tread on, and fit a full set at change time.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

Don't get the old Super Maxx TT, they were naff.  Get the new Super Maxx RT.
I hated my Goodyear F1's on the mk5 GTI.  Bang, bang, bang from the front axle as they gripped then let go, awful.  I was really pleased when they wore down and I put cheapo Avons Z5's on, much better.
