I bought Whispbar through bars for my Mk7 GTD 5 door as I wanted the extra width for 3 bikes. They are mega easy to take on/off once they are set up, are very low profile, make virtually no noise and have negligible effect on fuel economy. Also in the opinion of my teenage son they look so much better than the VW genuine ones which look really big and tall.

Hi 205 - I'm looking at getting the Whispbars for my GTD 5Dr but wanted to see what the footpack fitting looked like when fitted. Just wondered if you'd be able to upload a pic? Thanks

I've got some photos but I've no idea how to upload onto here  I've clicked on the insert picture button but it just does this

Does anyone know if the Thule Proride 591 fits to the Official VW (Mont Blanc?) roof bars?

I have some aerobars and 2 591s from my previous car but prefer the look of the OEM bars.

To answer my own question, yes they do fit. The official VW t-tracks are the same size as Thule t-tracks. I have also managed to fit 4 bike carriers across the bars without issues. It is tight, but they fit.
3dr GTD, Carbon Grey.

Hi guys, question please for those with the VW genuine roof bars. Just bagged a set of genuine MK7 (4 door) roof bars from the bay (in mint condition) for only just over the ton mark.

My question is very simple. As the bars might be on for a few weeks at a time (to carry my bike), where the 4 metal brackets clip under the door openings front and rear (with the little dimples), apart from the area where they actually attach under the door recesses, does the metal of the clips touch the paintwork any where else.

Reason I ask is that I'm a little concerned that if the metal of the brackets completely makes contact with the car's paintwork over it's whole length will vibrations etc from normal running of the car (going over bumps etc), cause the metal to rub against the paintwork scratching it or worse, rubbing the paint off - or have VW thought about this.

I don't have mine yet (will arrive tomorrow I hope), so was thinking of covering all 4 brackets with electrical insulation tape to isolate the metal from the paintwork or is this just not needed ?

Thanks.

I think you're supposed to get rubber/foam protectors.

Yeah Chris, I know that the plastic "feet" (both the inner and outer parts that lock together) have rubber feet, but I was more concerned about the actual metal brackets that hold the racks onto the car roof. These have to touch the car's paintwork at some point ?

I don't think any metal parts touch Andrew. You'd have hundreds of people complaining on here if roof bars were damaging paint.

Thread resurrection but i found it useful when i was looking for a roof bars and box combo, i went with the whispbars flush fit bars and a Kamei Corvara 390s box so thiught i'd offer a little review of both.

Firstly the bars are fantastic quality and very robust and sturdy once fitted, they're a little fiddly to set up initially but once you've set the width and applied the 3m film and rubber self adhesive pads it's pretty straight forward to put them on the car, once they're on they look pretty smart imo with the low profile it almost makes the car look more purposeful!

The wind noise with just the bars fitted is fairly minimal, i have the pano sunroof fitted and it's not intrusive at all.

The roof box is awesome quality and a little OCD bonus it's made in the same place as the car, Wolfsburg!!, dual opening and very secure once sat on the bars, it's single lock either side and the keys can only be removed once it's properly locked, however it's the connection between the box and bars which makes the difference imo, unlike other boxes it has four adjustable feet which sit in the channel of the bars which then "grab" onto the bars, so no visible attachment and no need to cut the rubber inserts on the whispbars!! Plus it takes about 30 seconds to fit!

There is some noticable wind noise with the box fitted but not to the point of being annoying imo, it's not the cheapest of combinations but is well worth the cost imo.

Some pics:

The feet of the bars have not marked my roof paint or the plastic of the sunroof surround however i've only had them fitted for a month, i would prbably suggest some form of protection film if leaving them on long term.

Hope this was helpful. :afro:
