I do wonder whether builds are prioritised due to expected shipping. I have noticed that for the first time in ages, there is a huge gap in the Emden to Port of Tyne (my car is planned to be shipped to port of Tyne)scheduled runs. There hasn’t been a ship from Emden in well over a week, and looking forward to 28 Aug 13 (as far as it will let you go), the schedule shows no further expected shipping trips between the 2 ports.

From the point of view of getting my car built and to destination, there’s nowt spoiling – it would be sitting dockside for the best part of 2 weeks if it had been built at the start of BW33. I wonder if VW have taken this into account when putting off my BW33 built to what is likely to be early BW35? Could I believe they are that well organised to take the lack of shipping into consideration?

Perhaps the demand for new plate delivery has mainly been fulfilled (the cars are now with the dealers, or at least in the hands of VW UK at portside) and there aren’t enough cars left to ship that would justify a Emden to Tyne direct sailing. Perhaps I should be looking for ships going to Sheerness from Emden and then going to Tyne from Sheerness.

You might be onto something there Bud. My confirmed BW32 Order (although I'm guessing it was actually built in week33) went into transit last Thursday (15th August). I've been keeping a close eye on the vehicle carrier shipping out of Emden and all of a sudden there are three ships leaving for Sheerness within a day of each other this week.... I'm hoping mine is on one of them.

So maybe you are right. Maybe they're working the build schedules around the shipping schedules??? (Or am I just clutching at straws?)

Isn't the whole point of the 4 weeks confirmed before build etc etc to make sure they have all the stuff they need in time for a build? Sounds like one big farce to me, weeeeee along for the ride.

Absolutely hate waiting, but set my px in stone thankfully so I'm just sat on that, so thats helping to keep relative sanity

I think once the tracker says "In Transit" and changes from "This model is expected in 4 weeks etc" to "Your vehicle is on the next stage of its journey to the UK" that's when they've checked it on to the boat. Guessing this, but on Saturday mine said the first (dealer said it showed as still being in Wolfsburg), then changed on Sunday to the second which was followed by an email from the dealer on Monday saying it was showing as on the boat to Sheerness.

Tracker still down for me. Growing very anxious now build was due to commence this week. Can't deal with any more delays I think I will enter into full breakdown mode if that happens.

Going to give it till the weekend if no progress then mr Thomas will be getting an email from me.

Mr Thomas (or any of his office staff) hasn't replied to my email (not even an acknowledgement) sent around 11am yesterday morning, so I wouldn't hold me breath for a reply - I don't think he gives a sh!te while we keep buying GTIs and GTDs.

They make u want to punch summat.

What would be a good non VAG equivalent/alternative to seriously consider instead of the gtd.

120d?  Its a tough one, to get powerful diesel + build quality + desirability and not go VAG.

Are you wedded to Diesel or would you consider petrol?

If Audi have their own ring-fenced supply of the 184PS 2.0TDI unit that VW cannot plunder, then the nearest equivalent to the GTD would be the A3 2.0TDI (184) S-line with comfort pack and a few other small options (which will make it about £2000 more than the GTD, but you get those amazing ½ leather S-line sports seats (that are worth a grand over the standard GTI/GTD cloth seats IMO). Audi also comes with 3 years breakdown cover instead of 1 – that’s got to be worth an extra £150. Only downside if you’re looking for practicality is that the 3 door version looks massively better than the 5 door version.

Because these shouldn’t be subject to allocation restrictions like the GTD, you might be more likely to get these within 4 months from order. If I was starting from scratch with what I know now, I would probably pick a 3 door A3 S-line 184 TDI if there was no indication of delays associated with the TDI unit.

BMW 120D is probably nearest equivalent, but not really a fan of the shape and you’d probably have to add on a fair few options to get it around GTD equipment levels (M135 has a lot of equipment that is associated with it being an “M”).

Does it?  I dunno, personally I can't stand the 3 door version.  Kinda looks to me like the back has its arse in the air.  There are 3 door cars that look proper good, the A3 I think looks mediocre.  I'll take the 5 door everytime.  People often say it looks like an estate, but I like this version.  I suspect there will be opinions on both sides here.

On BMW equipment levels:

Con - You got to add a lot of stuff to get it to the Golf level
Pro - Virtually everything you do add is better than the equivalent Golf
Con - Drives cost up fast!
Pro - BMW will likely discount it all anyway putting the costs back in line

Its tricky and almost apples and oranges.  Because of BMW's kind of unique view of how cars should work the VW and Audi brands lack obvious competitors (Ford is lower price and quality).  I think you might have to go to Merc.  Or... if we discard the (German) view that German cars are better qulaity and more desirable there are a whole load of other brands that are frankly just as good.  May not have the same image but does it matter?  Its VW et al themselves who are largely responsible for the propoganda that you should be buying German.  A totally biased view.  If you want proof then look at what the Yanks think of German brands.  A German car is often synonymous with unreliability in the US, because the US has different biases!

Ok I got a bit off topic there.  My bad.
