That's the price of exclusivity and with that exclusivity comes far better residuals - 56% GFV on the GTD and 46% on the 1 series. If VW wanted to churn these out by the bucketload like they do with SE and GT then they would. In their infinite wisdon they have decided not to and eventually you might thank them for that when your £26k GTD is worth £3k more than your 1 series performance Diesel at 3 years old. I do say "might"!

Neither of us really care about residuals (aside from the impact they have on the lease cost - although the lease costs are remarkably close) as both are company cars... the advantage the Golf has is its 109g/km emissions... so my GTD will cost me £135/month in the first year... compared to £157/month for the 120d...

Well, that and it doesn't look like a bulldog chewing a wasp

My personal thoughts after looking at all options before settling on the GTD:

I think the 1 series is very common these days and not a looker IMO.

Agreed...

I consider the new A Class and CLS to be the best looking cars on the road

Really? Have you had you eyes tested recently?

Seriously, I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Front and side the A-class is a Scirocco rip off - the back looks like it was taken from an Auris. I suppose it's a compliment to the Scirocco that so many other car makers are ripping it off. I had an inquisitive look at it last year - Merc build quality and feel isn't what it was. I think they took more tips from Chrysler than Chrysler took from them when they got their heads together.

I'm sure the 125d residuals will be a lot closer to the GTD than £3k, that's the comparable car really not the 120d.

It is a great car (timing chain issues aside) and I see a lot less of the 123d's on the road than the Mk6 GTD's of which there seem to be hundreds (inc mine)...

I'm sure the 125d residuals will be a lot closer to the GTD than £3k, that's the comparable car really not the 120d.

45% on the 125D M-sport: worth £12735 (GFV) after 3 years/30k miles vs £28080 RRP. BMW gives you all the finance info on their website in the configurator for any selectable model, unlike Audi who make you contact the dealer for further info.
45% GFV is pretty poor for a premium marque, probably down to people buying 125D for the power rather than the all round package/looks. BMW seem to be trying very hard to draw buyers in on volume, some would say devaluing the brand. VW are going the other way - creating desirability to push into the premium tier.

120D is comparable on power (both 184PS), I suppose on image 125D compares with GTD.

Per BMW dealers, their GFV are lower in general because they want the customer to have enough deposit for the next purchase.

And if you compare models across the ranges, BMW cars tend to be faster (PS). The 120d is up against the GT no question there, 125d v GTD.

The 125d is faster than the GTD, will return 50mpg per long term test, fair enough looks are subjective. And VW are just s**t at building to order with new cars, it's nothing about exclusivity!!
Just wait till all the company car owners get their hands on the GTD, which will happen, it wont seem anywhere near as exclusive then when Jo Blogs sales rep is hoofing it next to you on the motorway.

Not knocking the GTD at all, I still love my Mk6 and the Mk7 looks ace, but there are other cars out other that are as good as it.

VW are fine at building cars to order when they want. You can get any other Golf with a 10-12 week wait - the waits we've seen for the GTI/GTD are self imposed by VW. Superior PS and rear wheel drive (for when it's not slippy) is pretty much all the 125D has on the GTD (better ride, refinement - BMW diesels are very rattly, equipment, styling in GTDs favour). People are prepared to wait 5 months for a GTI/GTD (well some of us), can the same be said for the BMW 120/123/125D?

Ha, Ill pretend I haven't read the hundreds of other posts about VW making a complete hash of the launch of the Mk7 GTI/D and believe in complete ignorance that its cus' they wanted too to "build exclusivity"!
They are a business and want to sell as many cars as possible, end of.

Did you test drive the 125d and make these decisions or is it just from reading online...

The BMW has been out for circa 18 months now so you cant really compare wait times, i'm sure in 18 months time you wont be waiting 5 months for a GTD because they will be everywhere same as the 1 series.

The Seat Leon FR is far better value than the GTD for essentially the same car with a slightly inferior interior but no one likes to make that point!

GTD is a good soot chucker but how you go on makes it sound like VW have revolutionised the industry with it

Mercedes A Class was worst car looked at in this class, claustrophobic interior with really weird high doors and letterbox rear view and that media screen, awful

On another note the work car park is starting to fill up with 13 and now 63 plates and quite a few A3 and the more I see them the happier I am at going GTD. Under a month for me now :)

My problem with the SEAT is the interior and paying so much less for something I sit in and know is compromised  for me would be not much consolation, think the only VAG group one I would go for outside Audi and VW is the Skoda and yes I have seen all in flesh to judge.
