Setting up valve clearances
« on: 18 July 2013, 22:26 »
I went by the book on how to do valve clearances but I'm sure its not correct, exh is 0.15mm and int is 0.08mm as setting.

The engine sounds really tappy though and stalls once warmed up, can someone guide me on how to set valves up through an inspection cover on a motorbike as I'm sure I've done it all wrong!

There's the engine on its first run

it just doesn't seem much 6 thou and 3.2 thou. but its small engine I suppose. you say its cutting on when hot. is the piston to cylinder clearance right?

yeah it is, haynes manual states if valve clearance is tight then it will cut out when warm, I turned the crank over when it warmed up and piston and valves were not touching through a feel.

ah right. I was just thinking if when the cylinder was bored out it wasn't enough to give the piston running clearance when it expanded thereby the piston jamming in the bore. I would open the valve clearance up slightly and run it just to confirm if it is or not the reason for engine cutting out.

can you guide me through how to set the clearances, loosen bolt, make sure cams aren't opening, slide filler gauge till its scraping lightly on exit and tighten up and recheck?

well im not sure of the exact set up. im guessing it has a single cam with 2 rockers going of to either side. if so you just need to make sure the sharp end of the cam lobe is pointing away from rocker arm and adjust valve clearance so the feeler gauge can slide with very slight friction. is it the adjusters with the screwdriver slot and the locking nut?

Did the clearances, it runs spot on and not like a hammer is constantly hitting it, my mistake was the filler gauges go in at an angle and slightly lift the arm, so you need to force a finger down to lay it flat and have a feel after as it took me 5 attempts on exhaust side as that arm had a gap of about 1.5mm from tapping it not the 0.15mm recommended. Thanks guys, its definitely a learning curve for me!

Now the real issue, getting carb setup
