SORTED AT LAST! 2.0 8V
« on: 13 August 2005, 20:02 »
Hello Peeps, those of you with a good memory will remember a week ago or so about
my engine troubles after fitting a 2e bottom end to find it's knockin' like a bag of spanners being shook...

Well now it's a different story. Just swapped the bottom end for another 2e tall block and got it all rebuilt and put in. Purrs like a cat.

The bits you need to buy are as follows:

Distributor Spacer - the gear on the bottom of the distributor of a 1.8 is totally wrong, you need to purchase a spacer from TSR, costs£ 23.50. (EZ/2.0CON1)

You have to use the 1.8 dizzy with the new gear from a 2.0 dizzy and the spacer above.

You need a breather plate also from TSR and a breather bung from guess where?

I also bought a metal heavy duty head gasket - almost £45!!!

A TSR manifold (4-1) for a short block 1.8, they now make a manifold for the 2.0 tall block! Yes, I was pissed off...... I had to put a spacer in the front engine mount to rock the engine back slightly, I also grinded out the bottom of the bulk head and welded a small archway in there to make room for the manifold.

Full system Jetex exhaust (manifold back)

Just getting the pennies together now for a Pack A head and cam from TSR.

I have took her for a spin, she's got sooooooooooo much more power bottom and mid-range that I don't feel the need to rag it like I did the 1.8 (after 180,000 miles and bad service history it was v.tired tho)

I am no expert on engines or mechanics but myself and a family friend mechanic did the conversion on my driveway in about 2 weeks after all the messing about trying to source the bits.

Anyway, as I said, no expert but I'll try to help out if anyone is looking at the conversion...

Knobby, you are gonna freakin love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The speedo needle seems to make a clean sweep right round to 120 mph, not as quick as that video but still quick!

Anyway good luck to anyone havin a go at doing it themselves!

Mark

Sweet... Glad you have her running....

I can't wait to get her in and running. I'm thinking i should have less problems than you though, as i went for a ADY (Short Block) Mk3 2L bottom end. The short block is the same as the PB bottom end. Probably wont be as torquie as yours.. but should be more rev'ie..

Hey u on messenger?

cheers

Yeah mine i a K-jet, sorry forgot to mention.

You are probably better off with the short block if its a revvier engine.
I've heard tall blocks with standard heads/manifolds are a bit suffocated at high rpm (5500)

In the short time i've had mine it seems to have the same sort of characteristics as my 1.8 except the torque increase.

How far off getting yours in are you Knobby?

Got in tonight and saw oil on the driveway... got under the car and there was oil all over the bottom of the engine. Looked like the sump was loose, done up a few bolts, shall see how she gets on... Bl00dy cars!

anyways.. its kinda a sign to get me off my ass to start this 2L lump.. been looking for a Performance cam but i think thats gonna have to wait until i can find one and then fit it once its in. Just gotta order all my bits to start the rebuild on the bottom end. Ordered a new performance clutch, just gotta order gaskets, bottom end bearings etc. Just need a chat with someone who has done a bottom end rebuild.

So ya please with the results then?

Knobby!

Hi from Slovenia...

I'm also interested in a 2.0L bottom end swap.

I drive a '88 digifant (code PB).
You mentioned two blocks (tall & short one).
Could you tell me what is the engine code of the short block 2.0 engines and what is the difference between these two engine blocks.
2E and ADY engine seem to be identical on paper (82.5x92.8 and 1984 ccm both)

Wich one is more compatible and easier to put together with my current 1.8 8V PB engine? What engine parts do I have to use from the 2L engine (block, cranckshaft, pistons, connecting rods)??? Everything accept the head? What about the ECU and injectors?

the short block is the easier to use. i'm pretty sure you just swap bottom ends complete, using the same fuelling etc from your car.
team grumpy....... its a way of life, not a forum post

there just as easy as each other, if your running digifant already, get the 2e ffrom the mk3, you can use the dizzy from the mk3 and all the head etc from your original engine, the difference between the two is the short block will rev better but the tall block will have more torque, and at the end of the day a 8v isnt really best for top end power, put a cam and gas flowed head and youve got a nice setup thatll have power all the way through

One thing you have to bear in mind with the tall block is that if you intend to fit a performance manifold to the tall block 2e engine it will foul the bulkhead. By using the short block ADY you shouldn't get any of those problems.

For anyone whos wondering, the "tall"block is 17mm taller than the  short block.

Unlucky Knobby, I know how you're feeling dude.

In answer to your earlier question: Yes, I am pleased with the results and all I've got is an extra 200cc.
Can't imagine what it's like for these people who have 1.8T conversions.
