What sort of price should I be looking to pay a garage to install a 2.0 16v engine, gearbox and wiring loom etc
That not to surply, just fit. Had a couple of quotes but not sure what the norm is.

Well it will just be labour, so by asking around you should get an idea how how long a garage will take, all should be similar, then its just labour rates. My local garages charge £40/h

It's a mk2. Fill it, drive it, enjoy it.

it also depends what model of golf you got. for example converting a driver will cost more than a gti. what kind you got anyway?

How "long is a piece of string" springs to my mind....
Hour rates will also depend on what issues they come across when fitting it.
Is the new engine sound? are You Sure?

I have got a 8v gti.
Not got an engine yet was wanting to see what the prices were to fit one before buying anything. Sort of wishing I had bought a 16v from the start now and would of just got that reconditioned and tweaked.
Going to see a local performance garage that deal with rebuilding engines and conversions see what they recommend.

Could you do half yourself then let the garage finish up. Might cut the costs down. You can probably remove the engine yourself, then just leave them with fitting a new one and the new loom. Is it not also easier to just buy a 16v straight up. Insurance will be stupidly high for any type of engine conversion. If your gunna do one do a big one so its worth the extra money. 20vt?

Wouldn't no were to start with doing it myself
Just got back from the garage and the bloke there recs the best route to go for would be the 2l 8v and run it carbs and tune it, he said he would easily be able to get 150bhp+ from it. Price wise he said 2k to fit and tune and for me to surply engine gearbox etc

Fuel economy will be crap and may have reliability issues so dont waste your time with that.
Add 2k to the value of your car (ie if you sold it) and see what you can buy .. I think there's a couple of G60 conversions out there for 3k and you'll get a very nice ABF conversion for less than 3k..
If you can't do it yourself, don't waste money paying someone else to do what someone else has already done and is selling for a loss...
