My 88' MK2 16v(slightly long)
« on: 11 August 2005, 16:38 »
Hey there folks, I have just been given the go ahead by my ball and chain, to spend some money on my golf(about £1800), now I know it has a few problems, probably more major than I like to agree to.

1st problem is a rather nasty oil leak, which I got a good look at the bottom of the engine today, there was fresh oil all over the bottom back of the sump and just above it, I have just bought a new rubber gasket for the rocker cover(I know that is leaking),
now does anybody know of any areas that oil leak could be coming from at the back of the engine or would it be the rocker cover ??

2nd problem is a rust, now except for the passenger door and both seals, the rest of the body is pretty good,(boot has some surface rust which must of been caused by something rubbing against it) oh and a hole where the mount for the lock plastic sits in)the door has a huge bubble at the bottom of it and both seals are flaking but are mot passable, now the door i dont think has gone all the way through, so would that be servicable ? and the seals, would it be better to have them replaced?? if so would it be best to have a body kit fitted or just get the VAG parts??

3rd problem is the handling, it has been lowered, which i think is just by the springs with standard shock, now I have had a look at a few kits, which is best(has anybody tried or got these ?)Koni RSK kits(£246.95), Weitec GT(£245.00)G-Max SSk (£199.00)FK A-K supertech(£275.00), anyhow as you can see I dont want to spend to much in that area, mainly because I think the engine will take a chunk out of my budget.

Now do strut braces really make that much difference and are the cheap ones just as good as the expensive ones and would it be good to change the bushes all round ??.

Well I will end it there, I will also post some pictures of my car and the area's I feel are needing work(When I figure it out :P).

Hope I have explained myself clearly and hope all you nice and wonderfull people can help.

The oil leak could be a few things :
1) Cam cover gasket ( as you have mentioned )
2) Sump gasket ( the ones VW supply now are rubber like the cam cover )
3) Crankshaft seal (flywheel end ) these can sometimes leak , but obviously its a gearbox out job .

The best thing to do is either clean the engine yourself or get a garage or car valet company to steam-clean it and then re-check it as that could save time and dosh in the long run

As for the rust , it maybe easier ( depending on how bad it is ) to get another door
I assume you are talking about the sills not 'seals' again it really depends on how bad the corrosion is after the paint and stone chip protection is removed  as to whether they need cutting out and replacing :undecided:

Suspension: you pays your money and you takes your choice :undecided:
I have bilstein sprintline kit on my vento which works fine on Track days and I had  Boge 30% uprated with eibach springs on my mk2 which again was good .
They were not a coilover kits but they were cheaper .
I have no experience of the kits you've mentioned but maybe some other peeps can guide you on that. :undecided:

Hope this helps

I have just fitted koni top adjustable springs and shocks to my 16v mk2 and they are mint! Good supple ride (not harsh!) and give excellent handling especially on the bumpy cack i have to drive on round here. Not much can keep up!
