Milltek Knocking
« on: 16 June 2013, 10:56 »
Sorry if this has already been covered. I bought a 1996 VR6 Highline about a month ago and am pleased that the VR's exhaust system is full Milltek , the problem I'm having is now that I have wound the coilovers down a few threads the exhaust is hitting the rear beam even more, any advise ?

I had this problem before, the exhuast clamp was touching the rear beam, I just turned it round. That stopped the knocking

When you have it non knocking (if at all possible) mark the joints carefully with a chisel or dremmel.
When it slips in a few months and starts rattling like a mofo all you have to do is line it back up

It is mark of a good exhaust fitter to cut and shape a custom exhaust to fit properly, most places just bash them on which does not stay rattle free for long even with the best materials like Miltek. Worth making sure your engine mounts are good as well.
Rear beam can be modified to give a bit more space, but this needs to be done properly and not just hacked out with a grinder.....

My exhaust was perfect on the first golf it was on, now it rattles like fook when its cold, very annoying as my daily drive is 4 miles each way, cars a £300 sh1tter and goes in the bin when the tax runs out in septemeber so I dont care

Thanks for the replays but its not knocking by the join (clamp) it's knocking on the bend that goes over the the beam. The previous owner has wrap some heavy duty matting around a portion of the rear beam which is now worn hence the knocking. I can't understand why Milltek have design an exhaust that just about's clears the rear beam on standard ride hight MK3..
