Save up some more and pick up a 24-105 F4L secondhand.
The time saving will give you time to register on talkphotography.co.uk and post a bit and get let into their classifieds - normally well-priced stuff available there.

Its not so much the saving up,more the can i convince spending £500 on a new lens as well as a few grand finishing my vr6t build to the missus.
But if you think its worth it id stretch to £400 and lie.
Ive seen this one im now watching.

It is very much worth it.
If you want wider and you're on a crop body my only other recommendation would be:

Which is more monies again. Delivers stunning results with the F2.8 across the range though.

The Canon EFS 17-55 f2.8 is a really good lens, my brother has it on his 7D. But it's not full frame EF and at nearly £700, it's not cheap especially when you consider that £670 would get you an L series 24-105 f4.
Personally I would buy a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 or Sigma 18-50 f2.8 then if you eventually move to full frame, sell it to fund something L flavoured.
Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 for £350
