18" Monza question
« on: 15 May 2013, 07:25 »
My Golf has 18" Monza wheels but what I want to know is what finish did they come in from the factory? I've seen some cars with diamond cut finish and mine has just a plain silver finish.
I'm going to have them refurbished soon so I was curious to know if mine had already been refurbished at some point or was the diamond cut wheels an optional extra.
Mine are completely silver and some of the others I've seen appear to have gloss black  between the spokes.

Here's what they look like....

A quick Google turned up this thread http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,726.0.html

I'm pretty sure that Mk5's had diamond cut faces with grey inserts. Mk6's (called Monza Shadows) were the same, but with black inserts.

I believe that the ED30 was offered with all gloss black Monzas as an option, but hardly any were sold with these.

I would say that if yours are all silver, they would have been refurbished at some point, as this is the easiest and cheapest way to fix kerb rash and whiteworm.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Yes, the original finish would have been polished face with grey inners.
It was very prone to corrosion and thus why your wheels have been painted silver by a previous owner as there aren't many places that can refurbish polished alloys to a decent standard for sane money.
The polished faces can only be refurbished once or twice before they have to be powder coated anyway as each time they are refurbished in an original finish they shave some of the metal off.

There are many many many replicas of Monzas about too so you won't know 100% for sure whether yours are genuine VW ones until you take them off the car.
From the pic they look like genuine ones that have been powder coated silver though.

Are they definately 18's? The openings on the 18" Monza 2 or Shadows have a sharper edge around the opening where the paint meets the polisihed face than the 17" Monza's, the ones in the picture you posted look quite bevelled which makes them look like the 17's if that makes sense?

Yes, they are definitely 18". I'll have a look about to see what I can see. I'd prefer the diamond cut with gloss black between the spokes.

They do go soft on the refurb as they spray over the "cut" edge. Inside the back of the wheel will show if genuine BBS or Ronal.

Is this the car that has just been on 5th Gear? It def had 18" silver Monza's on which is unusual.
