WTF does this do..?

Hey all. I discovered this hanging off my car the other day. It's location is at the rear, driver's side, tucked up in the bumper (or was). The wires appear to lead off over the rear exhaust box.

No lights on my dash board/HUD, nothing appears to be incorrectly functioning, and I have no idea what a part number for this box is...

My car is a 57 plate Golf GTI (standard model).

I've got some photos here but whether they help, who knows? Any thoughts or feedback would be great!

well it doesn`t look standard. it looks like something someone has bodged in.. can you trace the wiring back to see where it goes?.. it might lead to a clue!

To me it looks like a Mercedes sprinter ambient temperature sensor to me as these are common to c

Scrap the previous post
From the pictures it has the same aesthetic design as a Mercedes ambient temp sensor
But the way that's wireing looks , it's got to be aftermarket
