Lowering a mk3: Questions!
« on: 04 August 2005, 14:53 »
Want to lower my mk3 by about 30mm so went to a local garage to get an idea of labour etc as I've seen some cheap Boge suspension units at a breakers near me. Guy in the garage says you can't lower a car without replacing  the axle bushes as well and they're about £90 each and he wants £25 a corner to fit it all

1. Is it worth buying these Boge Turbo gas shocks with a set of lowering springs for £120? They loook pretty much brand new, hardly any dirt or signs of wear on them. I appreciate they probably aint the best in the world but my budget is mad tight!

2. Is he telling me the truth about the rear axle bushes or just trying to juice me for some extra cash? If it's a £500 job just to drop it 30mm I might as well forget it!! Any help with this would be much appreciated as always guys. Wheels are 17" with 205/40/17 tyres, in case that makes any difference!

Don't have to replace the bushes, although £25 a corner is about right labour wise...

Cheers for the reply Dom, I didn't think he was being straight. Oh well, greedy fooker could have had my £100 but after consulting my Haynes manual, think I'll have a stab at it myself then just get the camber adjusted afterwards. Seems easy enough even for a ham-fisted numpty like me.

(I'll probably get halfway through realise I've bitten off more than I can chew and end up getting the mobile mechanic out to put my car back together again at £200 an hour!)

if the set up is anything like a mk2 it should be easy enough to do. if i was going to replace anything it'd be the bump stops (but if the suspesion set up looks pretty new chances are they will have been done) and the top mounts. first time i did anything to my car it was lowering it and it took me an afternoon. £120 isn't bad for the shox/springs but they are about £200 new so i'd try and beat him down and get them for £100.
