window fallen into front passenger door
« on: 23 April 2013, 20:43 »
Okay, so today driving home, passenger window went down but didn't go all the way down to start with (about inch or two could be seen) and then the window wouldn't go back up. Attempted to pull the window back up and out, for it only to fall completely into the door now!

I rang my local garage who specialise in VW's and they said bring it to them tomorrow. After a bit of reading it seems like the regulator clips have gone, I'm convinced it's not the motor as I can hear it attempting to work.

Couple of questions;
1) Is it possible the window may have just slipped out of position and will just be easy to slot back on and work properly?

2) How much should I be looking to be charged for this? As a student, on a student loan don't want to be looking to pay out loads; neither do I want to get mugged off by the garage!

Thanks guys :)

It will be the clips that have broke, There are kits on ebay for £10-£15 which include metal clips.
I had to do both my doors.

Yeah I've read the DIY's on the net, had a go at trying to get the panel off earlier; I'm just not the hands on type of guy haha.. If I was to attempt to do this would this be the kit I need? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MK4-GOLF-BORA-WINDOW-REGULATOR-REPAIR-KIT-FRONT-LEFT-/220685515877?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3AVW%7CModel%3AGolf%7CPlat_Gen%3AMK+IV&hash=item3361e1bc65

It will definitely be the clips and you won't be able to just slot it back into place. The item you have linked to is a regulator repair kit, it doesn't appear to include clips which is the only part you need.

Make sure that you replace your clips with metal ones otherwise they will just break again. It's a fairly straightforward job even for someone who isn't experienced, set aside an afternoon and get stuck in, a garage will charge 2-3 hours labour :wink:

Is there any shops that sell these sort of clips rather than getting them online? I am in the Canterbury area

vw

but its part of a window repair kit that comes with new cables to hang the clips on and everything, £40 iirc.

£70 for a whole new regulator pannel with everything already set up so you can just swap the pannels iirc.

(pprices were fom 2 years ago so may have changed)
