Not the most common, mine was only rusty on one side! Arches are probably the most common...or the floor where the bungs are...or the front jacking points....hell a Mk3 will rust anywhere!
lol ive got all the common places I don't know about the floor yet is it under the drivers foot well carpet I have one 5p size scab just above my arch so it doesn't mean the arches have completely rotted yet I hope it hasn't  lol :P

thank you for your reply mate it was my first time doing this as well I wish I had a dremmel as sanding it down with sand paper took ages I would say mask a area around the rust not to close to the rust as you will uncover a bigger area of rust so you don't scratch or sand past the area I ended up scratching a bit of paintwork were I didn't mask the area. Treat the rust with kurust and let it dry just take your time mate as patience is the key if you filling hasn't gone to well sand it flat and then re apply make sure you heat the spray cans as it sticks to the bodywork better I used a bucket and hot tap water warmed them up nice take some pics and post it on here mate would like to see you tackle your door as my arch has a little rust on it I need to sort out :P

That won't take too long to come back through I'm afraid. Never been a fan of filling over rust. Should have cut it out and welded a plate in.
