Gearbox went CLONK!

OK, so i am on the way to the solicitors, to sign the contract on the house I am buying with the Mrs. We get about 2 miles away, and I have to stop at a pedestrian crossing. I go to pull away....CLONK! (loud) and I've got no drive, and a nasty clump clump clump sound unless I push the clutch in. FOOK! So we push the car up a side street and leg it to the solicitors.

Returned to the car later....phoned AA, waited for patrol guy despite me saying he wont be able to fix it Cox it's Box. Then I have to wait 20 Min's for him to get through on the phone for a tow truck. Wait another hour for the tow truck. 

Get it over to the mechanic and he has a listen, reckons its the differential pin. (phew!) no new Box needed! 
He also said I was lucky the sheared of pin didn't exit through the Box casing! 

More money on the car, when it should be going on the house !!   

I had to do loads of local journeys all weekend in me V6 Passat instead, 18mpg! £40 petrol in two days pootling about!!!

Yes you are lucky, a clonk is better than an almighty bang! I know as mine went while i was on the motorway and it obliterated the box cluch and flywheel.

Just had the mechanic on the phone. Second gear is stripped 

Need a complete gear set rebuild. 

New clutch will be going in at the same time since that was nearly gone as well.

You can get recon boxes with quaife diffs in for not a huge amount - pretty much the same as some people sell recons for if my memory serves me right.

quaife diff ? wassat then mate? uprated?

I'm hoping the gear set rebuild will be cheaper than a recon box. I put a box in a mk3 and it was around £450 i think.

Just got her back....New recon Box, new VAG clutch, and a fook load of my money gone.
