Why ever didn't you get an agreed value insurance policy?
Hindsight eh, I just wanted the cheapest insurance.

An agreed value policy through a specialist broker for an 20 year old car, often is cheaper than regular Direct Line type companies.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Ah the benifit hindsight!
Not OPs problem at the moment, but I'm sure he'll look into it, in the future
Moving on...
OPs car could easily be worth 2 to 3k, possibly more, but who knows on the day!
I would go down the cash in lieu of repair route, where the insurance company would agree a price to contribute to repairs, without the car being written off... Which is something I'd push for all day long, getting your car back as a cat c/d is a costly ball ache!
Be very kind to the insurance engineer, and he may sympathise with you and work it in your favour, without it being written off

HIC offer it for about £30 on top of any policy you buy, £30 bought me £2k cover on my GTI a few years back.

Lots of body ship places today have been recommending a accident management company to keep it out of insurance. They do basically the same thing minus giving me a claim against my name.

Update people: his insurance got in contact and as he accepted liability they are willing to flip the bill. I should get whiplash compensation as well and a courtesy car in the mean time. GTI spring festival should still be on for me.
