used engine oil smells like petrol
« on: 15 March 2013, 14:52 »
Call me a Moron if needed, but is this normal? No I didn't decide.to just sniff my dipstick. Just did the usual checks, kept the rag I wiped dipstick with in my pocket and I noticed I now smell like petrol. had a little look online and found that cars with turbos, can do but I also read that the float switch could be on way out? I have no idea. Googles not the best mechanic.  Anyone help? Should I be worrying? I do tend to do short journeys mostly.about 40mins each way to work. If that makes a difference.

Never noticed it on my old car but then I never sniffed the old oil (and it didn't have a turbo on it) lol.

This is normal - It's direct fuel injection into the cylinder so inevitably there will be 'some' mixing of Oil and Fuel.

Mine also has a whiff of Petrol. As it happens I had oil analysis done some time ago and the result came back negative for fuel dilution in the oil sample.

Are you sure your fuel pump seals are in the process of failing,as this if happens is very bad news and shouldn't be left.

No fuel should be mixing with oil whatsoever

The above is also a possibility but there is a degree of blow by in these engines so it's possible for a small amount of fuel to enter the oil over time.

Would that fault show up on vagcom? It doesn't stink of petrol, you wouldn't notice it straight away. How many of you are going to sniff ur oil next time?

It's a petrol engine, completely normal to smell of petrol.... there is always blow-by and especially when it's cold the engine runs richer to compensate for condensation on cylinders while it is still cold..... the petrol that condensed on the cylinder mixed with oil and a bit of it goes into the sump...

as long as your oil level does not increase by itself you should be ok (can be sign of failed seals or issue with injectors - leaking or coked up)....
