Have you checked your pollen filter recently?

Don't tease your Mk3 with the welder unless it really needs it. There are easier ways to seal up a hole.

yep think welding is a bit ott.. yeah the wetness is definitely coming from the floor but it'll be also coming from the pollen filter because the plastic seal/cover there is broken.

made 5 50mm circles from 2mm steel and siliconed them in today so should have no more wet and no more frozen inside of the windscreen. made 5 more to do the passenger side while the center console is out too

Untreated steel? You may have to weld it up after all. As said previous, don't get the welder out unless you have to. Should have got a grommet from a breaker or someone could have sent you some for the price of a stamp.
